They Got Inspired!

In July 2022, 21 young people from different parts of the world attended the 20th edition of our Peacebuilding Workshop in Kigali. You too get inspired by their testimonies on how youth can contribute to peacebuilding, unity, and reconciliation.

Gaining momentum as peacebuilders in their respective communities

Each year, selected students and young professionals from Rwanda, Africa and internationally convene to participate in PBI for lifelong learning and skills that help them become peace ambassadors in their respective communities by creating peace initiatives in their local communities and working for global peace.

Impact: PBI taught me much about peacebuilding on both concrete and theoretical levels

PBI turned my conception of the practice of peacebuilding from abstraction to a tangible way in which people better their communities. I had the opportunity to meet so many of my inspiring, courageous peers from a variety of African countries, who all fight against the odds to facilitate peace in areas ripped apart by violence……

Testimonials

My experience with PBI reinforced several feelings about peacebuilding especially the fact that we the youth have the energy and wisdom that can propel our people and countries into a future of lasting peace.
Seline Reyos, USA, 2022 International PBI Alumni
I had the opportunity to learn new elements that helped me understand that if a conflict is not prevented, there will be loss of innocent lives and so much more. So, peacebuilders ought to work tirelessly to ensure conflict does not escalate into violence.
Arusia Lopin Lokitoe Babel, South Sudan, 2022 International PBI Alumni
As someone who has only studied peacebuilding from more of a theoretical level, it humbled me to interact with people my age who fight against the odds to facilitate peace in areas ripped apart by violence and take initiative and facilitate real change in their communities. I learnt that we have more similarities than differences.
David Traugott USA, 2022 International PBI Alumni
As the current generation, we do not have to hold on to the same differences that have divided us all along. Instead, we must embrace what unites us, knowing that we have a responsibility to build a peaceful world for ourselves and for future generations.
Gloire Sebuyange Victoire, DRC, 2022 International PBI Alumni
Prior to this training, I was not aware of some topics such as critical thinking, comparative analysis of genocide, women in peacebuilding and the role of religious organizations in peacebuilding, but I can say that I learned a lot that will inspire me as a future peacebuilder.
Benimana Wellars, Rwanda, 2022 International PBI Alumni
I learned how to assess conflict and what causes it, which is sometimes different from what we see in the media. For example, I discovered that the root cause of the Israeli conflict was not religion. At PBI, we are given the tools to understand the most complex conflicts.
Masozera Ornella, Rwanda, 2022 International PBI Alumni
PBI has given me a deeper insight into how young people can be visionary leaders of their futures as the information and experience I have gathered over the past two weeks will help me to engage effectively with my community, both nationally and regionally.
Ikhlass Ahmed Altaher, Sudan, 2022 International PBI Alumni
Uko numva ko nkeneye amahoro, nkwiriye kumva ko na mugenzi wanjye ariko ayakeneye. Bigenze bityo, buri wese yakumva ko nta nyungu iri mu kubuza amahoro, kugirira nabi cyangwa gutesha agaciro mugenzi we.
Thabita Musabyimana, Rwanda, 2022 International PBI Alumni
During my time at PBI, I have learned many interesting and educational lessons. One of the most important things I learned is that the world faces many conflicts and complex situations, and young people have a role to play in managing them and building lasting peace.
Joelle M. Shabani, DRC, 2022 International PBI Alumni
PBI empowered me with eye-opening knowledge that will support my journey as a peacebuilder who can handle different people, understand different contexts of conflicts and who can see opportunities in diversity.
Anney Laurette Akariza, Rwanda, 2022 International PBI Alumni
Through PBI, I have learned that Rwanda's post-genocide peacebuilding efforts need to be applied in several African contexts, to inspire them for conflict prevention and country transformation as well as strengthening social cohesion.
Josephine Rosing, DRC, 2022 International PBI Alumni

I learned a lot about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda and how it was stopped. Learning how these conflicts were resolved and what mechanisms are in place to ensure lasting peace is my greatest comfort, knowing that we all have a role to play in creating lasting peace.
Elizabeth Kinta Gomez, Rwanda, 2022 International PBI Alumni
Les médias ont un rôle à jouer dans la perpétuation des conflits comme dans leurs résolutions, c’est pourquoi, c’est important d’avoir des acteurs consciencieux et responsable de leurs rôles dans la construction de la paix.
